North Carolina will have a majority (51 seats) and 32 congressional seats up for grabs, while there will be a "friendly but disciplined fight" for five congressional seats.
Srinagar: The Congress and the National Conference have agreed to divide up 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of next month's elections, senior politicians from both sides announced on Monday night, meaning the talks were successfully concluded just hours before the deadline for filing candidates for the first phase.
The NC will contest 51 seats for a majority and the Congress 32, the latter's J&K unit chief Tariq Hameed Khara told reporters, adding that the remaining two seats are reserved for the CPIM and the Panther Party.
Crucially, there will be a "friendly but disciplined fight" for the five seats, suggesting that differences between the two parties, both part of the opposition bloc, have not been completely resolved even after the Congress sacked two senior politicians this year.
Arrived in Srinagar in the morning.
